As I was reading this month’s issue of Real Simple magazine my brown eyes turned into red hearts as I spotted their inspiration page article called ”4 New Uses For Old Things – Valentine’s Edition”! DIY times … time to roll up my sleeves and and give this DIY card making a try using items that I already had in my home … matches … puzzle pieces … and birthday candles. Here’s the tear sheets of the magazine page and my DIY’s cards … (don’tcha love when ideas get you so excited to DIY!)
Above is a peek at 2 of the cards! Aren’t they adorable?
First the PUZZLE pieces – I could had painted / colored the puzzle pieces, but I decided to …
use the red spray paint I already had ….
I am not a fan of my penmanship (working on improving it!!!), so I opened up Microsoft Word doc and selected a FONT that I loved …. then added carbon copy under the paper (and over the poster card) so it could easily transfer to the card …
I’m basically using it as a template …
So I could then go over the outlined font using a pretty red pencil. Whatchathink of the card?
Here’s what I used for EACH card …
(1) used my biz note cards as a SIZE TEMPLATE, outlining it with a pencil onto a white poster board –> (2) cut the outline (snip snip snip), –> (3) attached magnetic strip to the back (because I want them to go on the fridge), and –> (4) for the 3D old items I used putty adhesive to attach them to the card (which is muuuuuch more manageable than glue!).
Here’s the CANDLE (YOU LIGHT UP MY LIFE) CARD – putty poooower …
I hand drew hearts and added the words with another font that I love called Yummy Cakes.
Whatchathink of it?
Lastly, I zoomed to our kitchen cabinet and yeeeeeah .. I did have matches … I thought it was adorable that there really where JUST 2 matches on it (aww, meant to be, right!). This was the easiest to make … write the message on the matches ….
which I did in PENCIL first to make sure I liked the spacing between letters, then went over it with a red pen. Whatchathink of this Valentine’s card? ….
I intentionally didn’t want to write Happy Valentine’s on the card so we can display it on non v-days. For hey, every day should be filled with love!

Aww, those cards are super cute! Which one are you giving away on V-day?
All of them
These are absolutely adorable! I love them – may try and re-create them and put my own spin on them. So creative Ada!
Have fun creating your own!!! Yaaay!
Oh these are so sweet. Will have to try it out!
They were sooo easy to do, thought I need to GLUE the magnets to the cards (the card fell off the fridge leaving the magnets as the decor hahaha)
I saw these in Real Simple, too! Very cute, effective and so simple! Great idea to make your own – they look perfect, Ada!
Aw, thanks Lisa, and they were VERY simple to do. I do suggest gluing the items onto the board as some candles fell off the putty (yikes, lesson learned).
