I had the looongest photo-shoot EVER today, or at least it felt like it – of the basement design (aka: guest room + more) that we completed in Feb. We hadn’t taken prof pics before to accommodate clients’ parents visit. We met their deadline to complete the design 1 day before parents arrived (phew!), but didn’t take ‘after pics’ so we wouldn’t be in the way of their lovely stay. However, the longer time passes the more things get added or slightly moved so we spent the 1st 1/2 hour styling. Ok, too tired to continue yapping so here’s Emily ….

Is everyone else as in love with coral as I am right now? Seriously. I actually find myself saying that about a lot of colors but it’s SO true! Such a bright, happy, fun, PRETTY color! I absolutely love today’s finds too, the mix of the bright coral and more “subdued” minty-green colors. I love the mix of the gold accessories with the punchy coral. Honestly.. I don’t even have a favorite because I love absolutely everything in each of these combinations. Do you have a favorite?

Happy wednesdays! Today I am featuring another one of my e-decorating designs – this one for a client who lives in Boston, MA …

… who wanted me to design her living room. She used to have the sofa in front of the fireplace, but it closed up the space, and she wanted the room to feel/look spacious so I flanked the sofa against the wall .. and added seating around it. The only item she wanted to ‘maybe’ keep was her desk. She mentioned that she LOVED the desk but was open to placing it somewhere else. OF COURSE, once I hear the word ‘love’ I knew I had to keep it in the room and design around it. Oh, what else does she love …. leather (hence rug), wood (see all the wood items sprinkled throughout the design?), and linen (I added beautiful sheer curtains).

She wanted a space to relax, and work…. and possibly an entertainment area. Her wish is my command = I added a butler tray (see below). Oh, did you notice the white lacquered MOOSE head? … haha. Hey, no one says you can’t have a sophisticated design WITH FUN!!! To keep her space looking ‘airy’ I added furniture pieces that weren’t boxy.

What do you think of the design?  Did you spot an item that you love? I love the (3 set) side tables (next to the sofa) bec they are a cross section of a tree trunk so you can see the lovely wood ring color variance. Well, I gotta run … i’m prepping another e-design! Have a BEAUTIFUL day!

Are you ready to make this week wonderful? You have the power to do so … and it can simply start with smiles of gratitude!! I love recapping weekly + daily ‘goods’, last week’s list = finishing a few design layouts, having 2 more clients, taking pics + measurements of another project (which is a workout since there is no elevator in her 5th floor walk up building) -> grateful that I can ‘workout’ even when I am not at the gym (haha), treating my intern to shoe shopping on her last day at the office (Friday; I miss you already Emily!), spending time with mom yesterday, and having hubby that creates the most delicious (drooling) weekend dinners! How was ur weekend? Lately I have shifted to spend more ‘fun’ time; and it so beautifully magical how much energy + time we can get (that we may sometimes think we do not have) when we invest in fun time.

Today’s is not a home decorating DIY, but it is oooh sooo cooool and EASY TO MAKE!! DIYs can be very relaxing, so if you do create this one let me know.  Ready? I will show you how I made a layered necklace from a t-shirt. Hmmmm, if you make it, wear it, and are ‘in’ your home … then, can you technically call yourself your home’s decor?  Maybe, maybe not!  I wish I remembered where I saw this made before, it’s not an original idea by me, but an ‘oooh-i-gotta-create-that-one-day’ diy. Ok, here’s the instructions:

Hunt down an old cotton t-shirt (any color you wish), I used my hubby’s t-shirt since it’s wider (and why would I used MY own … hahaha, ok I am not a meanie …. he simply has like 1,540,167 t-shirts).

Then cut strips horizontally (you want to maintain the circles you automatically get when you cut across the shirt):

Stretch the stripes … which will automatically go from FLAT to round strips … 

Then, add them together for the LAYERED look, and add a brooch (like my pink flower below): 

You can make it ANY color you want, by the t-shirt color you choose … ummm, I was a chicken and simply used a white t-shirt!

Whatchathink of the ‘necklace’? 

I hope it inspires you to look at things differently …. just like multi-purpose furniture, we can have multi-uses for items (even t-shirts). Have a CREATIVE day!!!

Photo above is a pic of my mommy (Spanish = mami) in the 60s or 70s. Isn’t she stylish rocking a raincoat with her long hair up!

Lately iiii have been putting my hair up more often … oh oh .. ‘am i turning into mom?’ :O Just recently at a project site I was taking pics + measurements (which is a bit of an exercise, so it was getting hot) and I quickly put up my hair in an updo (not a simple pony-tail, but an up-do).

The photo on the right, my mom told be it was ‘staged’ … she was pretending to have an adoring conversation with her crush as a friend took the pic (see how she is holding the photo hahaha.)

And yes, that’s me above sitting on my mom’s lap.  For a brief time she sported a short hairdo (ooh, ohh so have i !!). For the past few years my mom has developed a habit that just before she heads out the door she turns back and de-clutters …. like placing all the mail back in 1 pile and of course dirty dishes can NEVER be left in the sink (EVEN if it is one teacup w/spoon). And guess who has been doing that lately too???? The funny thing is that I don’t realize it until I see my husband’s smirk on his face, and the funnier thing is that mom doesn’t live with us so it is not something I see every day to ‘pick up the habit’ .. I just do it …. ahhhhhh!. BTW: I didn’t scan these pics, I simply took took photos of the photos from my phone + u/l to my computer (yep, nothing fancy). Its a great way to conserve printed photos into our digital world. I didn’t use a tripod, but I recommend that you do so (since I had to take about 5 pics to get a non-blurry one, EVEN when I held my breath to minimize movement.) ALSO, you can create gift tags my simply copying the photos like I did below ….

(1) copied flushing the photo to the left, (2) folded + cut 3 sides, (3) punch-holed the holded upper corner, (4) voila …. custom tag! 

Ok, so truth be told as much as I say … oooh ohhhh at our similar mannerisms it’s an honor having her characteristics - her sense of humor (I got my one-liner sarcasm from my mom), her problem solving skills, and much more. I love you mami! Happy Mother’s Day to moms! Hey, do you find yourself becoming a lil bit more like your mom? I would love to hear how.

Happy Wednesday!!! I’m off to a design presentation today in Brooklyn – where I will be showing my client the designs I created for her living room (w/media area + dining area), guest room (with a lil bit of Moroccan favor added, plus bedroom design (incl. roman shades that pull down from the top + up from the bottom) …. I’m SO excited to reveal the design!

Today’s post are pics of a living room design that I created for Christopher – one of my clients in Astoria, Queens. My client was a young bachelor that had just moved into his 1st apartment. He was keeping a tv stand (donated by the previous tenant … yeaahhh … I love when my clients can save money, it was in great condition so we used it in the design). Chris also spotted a sofa that we loved + purchased on his own, so with those 2 items in the room and learning more about Chris’s likes and dislikes, I created a furniture placement layout that opened up the room to incorporate a lounge area for him and his pals to watch sports, dining space, and bar area (which also served as his ‘library’ .. hmmm, I guess that makes it 4 functions!!). I sourced the dining table, chairs, coffee table pillows, ….

… ummm .. ok I sourced practically everything u see in the photos (minus – the books). The ‘design trick’ to maintain a small room from looking crowded is adding furniture items that are NOT bulky – like this amazing coffee table (super strong and yet NOT bulky):

Here’s the transformation … including a grown up dining area (yeaaaahhh!!!), and a sophisticated bar shelf within the bookcase .. strategically (nice word huh!!!) placed aside the dining table:

Here’s a closer look of the high appropriate ‘bar area’ – drinks anyone?? Fuzzy Navel <- that used to be my fave drink back in my party days!

One of my fave items for this client was the frame I created highlighting his goal and passion (seen above the sofa). Wanna  guess what it is? Hint … comic books! Ok, that was not a hint … that was straight out telling you what he loves. Here’s the scoop: my client intends to one day write/produce his own comic book (aka: ‘novelty’ books) – so as SOON as I heard this I knew I had to illuminate what he loves within the room .. so besides adding the wall system bookshelf, and the window bookshelf, I also recommended FRAMING pages of a book series that he owned (and had duplicates of)…. and so that we did …. I still remember seeing his face LIGHT up when I presented the idea – mission accomplished = happy client with an economical  design.

Yep, that’s me on a ladder …. (not sure why on earth I was wearing dangling earrings that day!) …. painting away one of my kitchen walls … black! Ok, ok I’m not just painting it a simple ‘black’, but using CHALKBOARD (aka: FUN) paint! Why? Bec. hubby and I love leaving each other messages! A great design is one that fits ‘our’ (homeowner’s) lifestyle and this is def us!

(Oooh, hubby and I just celebrated our 3 year … woohooo … wedding anniversary this weekend!) Ok, back to today’s post. I wasn’t fond of chalk when in school (homework eeewww), but now i LOVE it (if only my teachers knew!): 

This wall is where we keep some of our fave spices out in the open (our pantry is to the right of it where we keep the ‘not so often used spices). 

Check out this old post I have that reveals a message my hubby left me on the chalkboard wall that had me in happy tears, plus it shows more pics of the wall!  With our lifestyle, I designed our kitchen items to be very accessible … for us, our fam/guests staying over, and even for my assistants – where items often used are visible = increases (accessibility) comfort level.

Even our spoons, forks, and ice-cream scooper (of course THAT has to be easily accessible!!) is visible for easy attainability. 

Working from a home office has looooots of perks including having a homey-kitchen with a huge fridge to add lunch for the day/week. I considered my assistants when designing my kitchen, wanting them to feel comfortable reaching for any spoon, fork, dish, bowl .. usage of the microwave or even the oven! Yep, that’s how we roll over here!

Did you see my post where I show how/where I hung my teacups? And in that post I mention how I swear I have non-white dinnerware as well … here’s the reveal below …. some of my fave bowls in my kitchen. What color(s) is your kitchen wall? Have a beautiful day!

Their ‘challenge’ this month is posting a photo of a female …. so since hubby and I just celebrated our 3 year wedding anniversary … woohooooo …. I chose a pic of me (hubby took the photo) in my wedding dress in Bora Bora going for a ‘swim’.
